What are Jyotirlingas?
Jyotirlingas are twelve sacred shrines of Lord Shiva where he manifested as a column of light (Jyoti). These are considered the most holy abodes of Shiva, and visiting all twelve is believed to cleanse one's sins and grant moksha (liberation).
The Legend
According to Hindu mythology, once Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu had an argument about who was superior. To settle the dispute, Lord Shiva appeared as an infinite pillar of light (Jyotirlinga). Both gods tried to find the ends of this column but failed, thus establishing Shiva's supremacy.
