Travel tips

Carry Valid ID

A government-issued photo ID is required for hotel check-in and is useful at temple complexes — keep it accessible at all times.

Observe Temple Dress Codes

At Grishneshwar, men enter the sanctum bare-chested; traditional attire is expected for abhishek at Trimbakeshwar. Carry a dhoti/saree if you plan to perform puja inside the sanctum.

Start Early Every Day

This is a long-distance circuit (1,200+ km). Early departures ensure daylight driving, comfortable breaks, and time for unhurried darshan — especially the Pune–Bhimashankar–Nashik day.

Pack for Two Climates

Light woollens for the cool, green hills of Bhimashankar and Trimbakeshwar (especially mornings), and light cottons for the warmer Marathwada leg.

Rain Gear in Monsoon

If travelling in Shravan, carry waterproofs — the Sahyadri roads to Bhimashankar can be wet and slippery, and leeches are common on forest paths.

Book Special Pujas in Advance

Kalsarpa Shanti and Narayan Nagbali at Trimbakeshwar take a full morning and must be reserved ahead — plan your day around them if desired.

Mind Sanctum Restrictions

Phones, cameras, and bags are generally not permitted inside the inner sanctums — deposit them at the counters and follow each temple's rules.

Carry Cash

Smaller temple towns in Marathwada have limited card/ATM facilities — keep cash for puja offerings, donations, and incidentals.

Frequently asked questions

Tap a question to read the answer.

It is the Panch Jyotirlinga pilgrimage — a single journey covering all five of Maharashtra's jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva: Bhimashankar (in the Sahyadri), Trimbakeshwar (near Nashik), Grishneshwar (the twelfth and final jyotirlinga, beside Ellora), Aundha Nagnath (Hingoli), and Parli Vaijnath (Beed). Maharashtra holds five of the twelve jyotirlingas — more than any other state — making this one of the richest Shiva pilgrimages in India.
