Saurashtra Shiva Circuit

The Saurashtra Shiva Circuit is a dedicated Shaivite pilgrimage that threads together the great shrines of Lord Shiva across the Kathiawar peninsula of Gujarat — a single journey that carries the devotee from the first of the twelve jyotirlingas to the sacred mountain of Girnar. At its heart stands Somnath, the first and foremost jyotirlinga, rising on the shore of the Arabian Sea at Prabhas Patan, where the Moon God Chandra is said to have prayed to Lord Shiva and regained his radiance. The circuit also includes Nageshwar near Dwarka — the tenth jyotirlinga, Nagnath, the Lord of Serpents who protects devotees from all poisons — so that both of Saurashtra's jyotirlingas are received in one yatra, exactly as named together in the ancient Dwadasha Jyotirlinga stotra: "Saurashtre Somnatham cha… Nagesham Darukavane." This 8-day package begins and ends at Ahmedabad and moves in a sacred loop through the peninsula. Beyond the two jyotirlingas, it brings the pilgrim to the ancient Bileshwar Mahadev near Porbandar — a swayambhu Shiva shrine of great antiquity — and culminates at the foot of Mount Girnar, the abode of Dattatreya and the immortal Naths, at the revered Bhavnath Mahadev Temple. Bhavnath, with its self-manifested Shiva linga and the sacred Mrigi Kund, is the site of Gujarat's famous Mahashivratri Mela, where Naga sadhus of the Juna Akhada arrive in grand procession. Along the way, the circuit weaves in the holy Triveni Sangam, Bhalka Tirth, the Somnath evening Aarti, and the Light & Sound show on the seafront.
